MAC Absolutely It ProLongwear Lip Pencil & Application Tips

For the longest, I avoided lip liners feeling like they were, well... outdated.  However, the more I got into makeup, the more that I understood that lip liners do much more than this:
I am pretty sure this wasn't a look Sandra wore in any seriousness, but we've all seen this on someone at one time or another.  Celebs like Pam Anderson, J. Lo, and Brandi all shared Sandra's company with the obvious lip liner look throughout the 90's.  That look kept me far away from liners until the past couple years when I learned that they are much more.

Lip liners are wonderful for accentuating the shape of your lips, creating a fuller, sexier lip, adding dimension, making lipstick last longer, and helps prevent lipstick feathering.  Knowing that lip liners are much more than the bad 90's versions, I am using them much more often including a fairly recent purchase of MAC's Prolongwear lip liner in Absolutely It.
MAC Absolutely It topped with clear gloss
Absolutely It is a beautiful, warm, matte lip liner that is described on MAC's site as a soft Burgundy.  The Prolongwear liner is transfer resistant, rich saturated color that adheres instantly.  It retails for $19.50 and can be purchased at

It lasts and lasts, and will last even longer when you set it with translucent powder! (Just blot on tissue when done and dust a bit of powder over top).  It's a deep, bold lip color that's perfect for the Fall/Winter months.  I like to wear it alone or with a clear gloss over top as shown in the photos below.

Tips for avoiding 90's lined lips:
Exfoliate lips prior to application.(e.l.f. lip exfoliator) I first outline my lips starting on the upper, inner corners.  I always stay on or inside my natural lip line to avoid the drag or fake lip look.  If you have a thin upper lip you can draw straight across you cupids bow (where your upper lip has the v shape) to make lips look fuller, but other than that please stay on or inside natural lip line!

Then, you can fill in the rest of the lip with the same lip pencil, top with a coordinating lipstick or gloss for good staying power, or just leave the lined and filled lips as is.

Or, in some instances you can leave lips lined on the perimeter only, then top with a lipstick or gloss in a coordinating color. This will give lips definition. Just make sure it's blended well so you aren't looking like poor Sandra above!  I prefer this method with brown pencil and nude lipstick or gloss, a la Scott Barnes and his Maybelline pencils. More on that later.

Have you tried MAC's Absolutely It lip liner? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
Thanks for reading!

  1. you said it so right. I have been avoiding lip liners for the longest time as I recall the overlined lips from the 90's. The shade looks so pretty on you. Looks like a very versatile shade and pretty much goes with anything.

  2. That colour looks great on you! Somehow colours like that just end up looking brown on me though. I also love using lip liners as my main lip colour. I have a hot pink one from NYX that looks great as a matte pink lip!

  3. Just gorgeous! Haven't tried it, but it looks amazing!

  4. I have become such a fan of lip liners lately too. Especially for keeping lipstick on longer!
