Revlon ColorBurst Matte & Lacquer Balms-Shamless vs Demure

Recently, the nearest Walgreens had Revlon's newer ColorBurst Matte and Lacquer Balms for 40% off, then with in-store and manufacturer's coupons I ended up paying around $1.50 for each, SCORE! I picked the bold, matte, violet color-Shamless, and the soft, pink, lacquer color-Demure.  Check out which formula was better, the matte or lacquer...

The retractable lip balms are made with moisturizing shea, mango, and coconut butter.  There are ten matte shades, and ten lacquer shades.  They have a minty smell, and go on quite creamy.

Shamless
I really love bold colors, and I really wanted to love this but….it just wasn't working for me.  The color is a purple hue and it's definitely quite bold indeed, but still quite pretty.  The problem I had was with the formula.

I started with exfoliated lips, nothing on them.  It goes on smooth like a balm, and after it's applied, it just dries funny.  It'll leave small areas of cakey, clumps that you can kind of see in the above photo.  Five minutes after applying, it settles around the perimeter of your mouth(photo below) and rubs off the inner most part of your lip.  I don't like it at all.

I tried it over invisible liner to see if it'd hold in place better, nope, same thing.  Then I tried it more sheer over my clear eos balm, and that worked better giving just a smooth sheer wash of the color, but I think it defeats the matte purpose, don't you?

For me, I don't think Revlon nailed this "matte balm" concept and I am afraid to try more colors.  I've tried some great matte formulas, think OCC Lip Tars, and this in no way compares.  For only a little bit more $ you might as well get a Lip tar for a great matte color.  Unless like me, you only paid around $1.50 for them after coupons, then zip it and just wear it over another lip balm ;)

Demure
The perfect pair to a bold smokey eye? A soft, pale, pink lip, just like Demure. This color is so pretty!  It has a bit of classy sparkle, and the lacquer texture is comparable to a non-sticky gloss texture, or a balm.  It's not terribly long lasting, but it doesn't disappear too fast either.

I am much happier with Revlon's lacquer formula!  This color will be so pretty combined with other colors of lipstick and glosses.  I have really been loving it and keeping it in my purse for touch ups through the day!

Overall
Loved the lacquer, disliked the matte! Demure kicked Shameless' butt, lacquer wins!  These both retail around $6.49, unless you catch them on sale, and stack those coupons ladies!!

Have you tried these? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

  1. I've looked at 5 different stores for shameless and every single time I found the display it was the only shade sold out! I see why though because it's so gorgeous! Hopefully one day I'll find it!

  6. I think I'll be skipping the matte ones-I'm so picky about my matte formulas that I've only ever found one that I liked enough to wear! Thanks for the review!
