Friday Five Must Haves to Ring in the New Year

It's the last Friday of the year, and if you're armed with today's Friday fives you will be set for New Year's Eve.  Whether you watch the ball drop from your couch or toast at a bar top under a disco ball, check these must haves off your list before the clock strikes midnight:

1.SomethingSparkly!
When you're planning your New Year's Eve outfit anything goes!  As long as you are comfortable and feel super gorgeous go for it.  But what's New Year's Eve without a little sparkle?  Add a blinged out hair clip or head band,- rock a sequin dress, shorts, or skirt, -wear those giant cocktail rings sitting in your jewelry box,- dust that body glitter on the girls.  Even if you and your grandma watch the ball drop from your love seat, adding a little sparkle to your ensemble will keep you shinning into 2012.

"I'm just trying to change the world one sequin at a time."   Lady GaGa

  2.  Some Bubbly!
I'm not saying you have to be poppin bottles all night, unless you want to, but pick up a bottle of champagne to toast the great things to come in 2012.  Not a drinker? They make some fabulous non-alcoholic versions or pick up some sparkling cider.  Even as a kid,  I remember making a toast with my sparkling juice in plastic champagne glasses.  It's tradition to toast the New Year, so do it your way.  Also, make sure if you are getting tipsy that you have a sober ride home, so that your 2012 isn't spent nursing any injuries.  Body casts aren't that hot.

 3. Partner/Partners in Crime
Whether it's aunt Jenny, your bestie Ruth, your hubby, your dad, your cat Fe Fe or all of the above in the same room, celebrate with people you love, and someone you can have a fun night with.   Discuss resolutions, memories of the year, laugh, dance, play games, eat and just have a great time doing whatever it is you enjoy.  Don't forget that someone to kiss when the ball drops :)

4.  A Great Pair of Heels
Nothing brings out your inner bombshell better than a sexy pair of heels.  Amen.  I will have to literally dust mine off, sad right, but they will be making an appearance even if my butt stays home.  I'm not sure I'd suggest brand new pair since you do want  to make it from cocktail hour to midnight without getting blisters.  Not the heel type?  I just saw a cute pair of nude flats at Forever 21 yesterday with jewel and feather embellishment at the toe.  That'd also check the sparkly off your list :)  Whatever your style, rock those fabulous shoes to help boost your New Year mood.

5.   A Great Attitude
This is something we can't buy at the store or get from someone else.  Just try to think, it's going to be a new year right?  Even if 2011 was the ultimate shit storm year of your life, 2012 doesn't have to be too.  Reflect on the year and what could be done differently or repeated to make this, and all the years to follow, the best of your life.  Surround yourself with positivity and if your Debbie downer friend wants to spend the night complaining leave her ass at home.  Say goodbye to 2011's drama with a smile, if you had some, and think happy thoughts :)
New Year's Eve tends to be one of the most hyped up days of the year that most people end up disappointed that it wasn't all that they had hoped.  Don't expect something from a  movie.  Just have fun in the moment, with whatever you're doing, even if it's sleeping.

"You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take."  Wayne Gretzky

Have a sparkly, bubbly, social, sexy, and happy New Year!!!!

Well, thanks to People Style Watch's  November issue, you can.  Check out part of the article here:

Kat Von D Painted Love Lipstick in Celebutard Review

I got a great lip sampler for Christmas from Sephora that included 6 different lip color samplers.  Included was a mini sampler version of Kat Von D's Painted Love lipstick in Celebutard.  I was excited to try this since I haven't tried any of her makeup products yet, and because it looks to be a pretty, peachy nude color.  Here's what the sampler looks like:

Happy Festivus! and What is Festivus?

The writer of Seinfeld, Dan O'Keefe,  celebrated "Festivus" with his family growing up.  It was a new holiday tradition that his father made up after reading about a Festivus holiday in a book.  It was a crazy, silly holiday with unique traditions that later became a Seinfeld episode.
Today, Festivus is actually celebrated by hundreds of thousands.  It has grown into a non-denominational fun holiday.  Some stay true to the Seinfeld episode and carry out their actual traditions, others just do bits and parts.  For most, I believe it's just a silly, crazy, fun way to celebrate the season.  So, Happy Festivus to all!!

Harajuku Mini Woobie Hoodie Set Review

Singer/designer Gwen Stefani created a new children's clothing line for Target stores called Harajuku Mini.  It includes accessories and outfits in infant up to tween sizes for boys and girls.  The line was inspired by the fun, playful clothing in Japan.

Cost:
This set was $30.00, but my sister sent it to my one year old for Christmas so, thanks Aunt Danielle!  The line ranges in price for their other items.

Product Info:

Woobie Hoodie Set

  • Number of Pieces: 2
  • Includes: Pants, Hoodie
  • Sizing: Infant (12 - 24 Months) Sizing
  • Material: 100 % Polyester
  • Closure Style: Zipper, Pull-On Closure(s)
  • Sleeve Style: Long Sleeves
  • Garment Length: Ankle
  • Care and Cleaning: Tumble Dry Low, Machine Wash Cold

(Product Info from http://www.target.com)

Packaging:
Ours was sent as a gift which meant it was wrapped so that was fun for Harlow to open :) Otherwise, it comes with a cute little hamburger shaped tag attached.

Where to buy it:
This can only be bought in Target stores.  Possibly eBay?

Pros:

  • We loved how soft and cozy the material was to the touch.
  • It was easy to put on her considering she's a wiggle worm, this slipped right on.
  • It's a really cute design, she looked like a little Panda in it.  The pink writing on the back, "Stay Cute" added the perfect girly touch.
  • We have wood floors, and even with her crawling around all day on them the material held up perfectly.

Cons:

  • We live in colder winter climate and it was nice and thick to keep her warm but almost too toasty because she started to sweat after a few hours so we just removed the hoodie and she had a onesie underneath.
  • The website says it's machine washable but the label says to hand wash? Having to hand wash a child's outfit is  kind of a pain because they get things dirty so easily and often.

Overall:
The overall experience we had with with this item was great!  My daughter loved it, and I loved it.  The super soft material held up great and it's so dang cute! It was a nice change from the pink, purple, butterflies, flowers, and ruffles that's typical for baby girl clothing. feeling the soft  The fact that it was easy to get off and on was great too because it can be a task to get some baby clothes on her.  She doesn't want to sit still for buttons and layers and snaps.  It ends up a battle and I was relieved this was so easy :) Although this is the only items we've tried in this line we would recommend it to a friend and are more willing to buy more pieces.

Kourtney and Khloe Take Their Manhood?

I was waiting in a very long line at the grocery store when I over heard three guys in the line next to me talking basketball.  Normally, I'd tune out and not pay any attention but this time what they were saying made me laugh inside, or die a little.
They looked to be in their thirties or so and were wearing Car hart jackets and work boots.  Each had a twelve pack in tow.  Now, I only noted this because the path their conversation went sent my mind a wonder, and you'll see why in a second.
So, anyway like I said, they were talking about basketball players and which teams they were playing for this year.  Then, one mentioned a player but couldn't remember his name.  The other guys started guessing when the guy said, "you know, the one that's married to Khloe Kardashian."  At that point they all gave an, "Oh", in unison.  "Lamar Odom".  These guys knew more about Khloe Kardashian, reality diva, than Lamar Odom, famous basketball player.  Their conversation continued on about the Kardashian's family life at which point I giggled and stopped paying attention all together.  Just way too much testosterone in the air!  ;)
I am personally not that big a fan of this reality family, but it sure seems like they have some serious followers that know an awful lot about them.  To each is own, right?

Olivia Wilde Inspired Edgy Pony Tail Tutorial

Wow them at your next family or work holiday party with this sexy, edgy twist to the typical blah pony tail.  I have to admit, the first time I saw this look in People Style Watch Dec 11/Jan 12, I wasn't all that crazy about it.  I actually thought it reminded me of a kiddie 80's pony style.  The more I flipped through the magazine, the more it grew on me.  Partly because she's so gorgeous she can pull anything off, but also because it's a different twist to an everyday pony tail.  It looks almost like a perfect kinked wave in her pony, but it's actually done with small clear hair bands.
When I realized how easy it'd be to recreate the look I decided to give it  a try.  I am by no means as gorgeous as Ms. Wilde, but it was fun to channel my inner hottie and copy this edgy, fun, different look.  I was surprised to find that I kinda liked it!  I am not sure where this kind of look would be best worn, but it sure felt sexy to sport around for the day. I actually got a few complements on it at the store.  It certainly commands attention,  Here's what I did:

What you need:

  • small clear hair bands
  • hair spray
  • hair elastic

Step One:    I started off with second day hair, and pulled it up into a pony in the back of my head.  The article says "med high pony", but whatever is comfortable on you.  I then sprayed it with hairspray to give some texture, hold and a little body.

Step Two:  Add a small clear elastic about every two inches or so down the pony.

Step Three:  I sprayed it once more with hairspray, then I began to gently tug the hair  horizontally between the elastics.  Play with it and get it to look how you want and you're all done!! Yay!

Pull this pretty look out of your bag of tricks next time you're feeling daring! Let me know what you come up with or if you have any questions or comments.  Thanks! Here's some more pics to check out the final result:

Maybelline Baby Lips Review

The makeup forums have been buzzing about this new lip balm from Maybelline.  I haven't read any reviews on it since I wanted to form an unbiased opinion on the product myself.  Here is what I found.

Cost:
$2.99

Product Claim :

• Visibly renewed lips and 8-hr hydration
• The secret: Exclusive lip renew formula with SPF 20
• Protects and moisturizes lips for a full 8 hours
• After 4 weeks, lips are visibly renewed and  reborn
• 6 varieties

Packaging:
I decided to go with Baby Lips Grape Vine, because I like grape flavors and scents.  It was easy to open, fits right in my purse or makeup bag, and has cute text graphics.  Other than that, there was nothing all that spectacular about the packaging.

Where to get it:
Baby Lips should be available in drugstores and anywhere Maybelline products are sold.  However, the first time I went to Target to purchase this it was completely sold out.  Every variety was cleared off the shelves.  That gave me the impression that it must be good stuff.  It could also have been due to the fact that Target has a printable store coupon for a dollar off and paired with a printable Maybelline coupon, it's totally free!  On my second trip it was back in stock and I paired my coupons and got it free. Yay!

First Impression:
The lip balm went on nice and smooth and I got a yummy whiff of grape scent.  There wasn't any hint of color, so it went on clear.  I was hoping for a little of the berry color from the balm to be visible on my lips but no such luck. My lips felt soft but after about five minutes or so they felt more dry than before I used it.

After 1 week:
I have been using the Baby Lips in place of my usual lip stuff for a little over a week now to really test out this product.  I have to say I am a little disappointed.  Every time I use it, after five minutes or so my lips feel drier than before.  My other balms never seem to do that.  I am a  little confused since the claim is 8 hr hydration.  Maybe if you keep re-applying it?  You have to since it makes your lips feel dry.

Overall:
The price was right, I was very pleased with the scent, and the fact that there is SPF 20, but other than that, it won't be replacing my usual choices for lip balm.  Maybe it's best used on chapped lips over a long period of time?  I just wasn't happy with the matte dry feeling it left on my lips only 5-10 minutes after applying it every time.  I probably won't recommend this over other types and won't buy it again.  I will be giving it a full four weeks to test the product claim, so stay tuned to see if my experience improves or stays the same.

Maybe you'll have better luck?  If you've tried this product let me know what you think in a comment below.  I'd really love to hear some other opinions because I know there are so many people who like this product.  I know I am probably not the only one who wasn't feeling it either, so please don't be shy and tell me about your experience with Baby Lips.  I'd also like to know what are some of your other favorite balms?

Update an Old Dress with Lace-DIY Tutorial

Today's tutorial was inspired by the Dec/Jan issue of People Style Watch.  There were some really cute basics with pretty lace details.  I thought this would be an easy, do-able way to update a simple go-to dress I've had for several years.  Here are the two items this project was inspired by found on page 110 in the magazine, in case you have it :)

Lace

Lace by kaquino21 on polyvore.com

These are great versatile basics just updated and made sexy, and girly with simple lace.  They also carry a hefty price tag. You can find these at www.rebeccataylor.com .
When I saw these, there were quite a few pieces in my closet I wanted to duplicate this look with, but I settled on my basic teal blue Forever 21 dress that I've had for several years.  I love to throw this on in the winter with tights or leggings and boots.  I love it so much I have it in red as well.  It was inexpensive and after having it so long, I thought a little lace would be the perfect way to make it fresh again. Here it is:

Originally, I wanted to sew this on.  Unfortunately, there was some sort of electrical issue with my sewing machine and it wouldn't run.  So, here is my No sew version of adding lace to update an old basic.
my tutorial

Materials:

  • Fabri-tac glue (or another adhesive for fabric)
  • scissors
  • measuring tape
  • an old dress, tee, or article of clothing
  • lace ( I used inexpensive black trim lace, see below)

  Step one:

First thing you want to do is to pin your lace onto your dress from the arm seam all the way around the collar, to the other arm seam.  You may want to run an iron over the lace before you pin it to keep the lace from curling.  Play with it, and place it however you like along neck and collar area.

When you get to the front , make sure to measure both sides from your shoulder seam to where your lace meets the arm seam to make sure it hits evenly on both sides.

Step two:
Start to glue down your lace.  Start from one end at the arm seam, and glue all the way around to the other removing the pins as you go, and pressing it down so that it adheres.  I just glued mine right on the collar seam.  Use a light hand with the glue because you don't want it seeping through the lace leaving visible white glue spots.

When you get to the end, carefully trim it, and glue into place.

Step three:
Let the glue dry and you are finished!! You can add a little glue to the lace to hold it down in certain spots where it may curl up.  This is optional and also depends on the type of lace you use.  Running an iron over it may help to keep the lace from curling as well.  Here is the final product:

Hope you enjoyed my tutorial and send me any questions you may have. Thanks! Here it is in action:

Thanks!
